Is winter a good time to prune trees ?

Pruning before bud break can be a great time to wrangle an untamed tree.  It is easier to spot deadwood in the canopy and there is also less mess to clean up once everything is on the ground because there are no leaves.

Disease pressure is also low with the cold temperatures.  So visibility, ease of clean up and low disease make for a great time to prune.  In the pic below we prune a japanese maple tree in Rocky Hill near
