Should I trim my hedges every year?

The short answer is “yes”.

By trimming your hedge or shrubs once per year the wound cut created from trimming is much smaller and seals over much more quickly than on a larger stem.

Think of it like a tree. If you top a tree by taking off its branches down to a large limb or main trunk the tree may have some response growth at the end but the branch will still rot and die back. Well if you cut a one inch diameter stem on a hemlock or arborvitae the end will also die back. By trimming annually the cuts are much smaller and the tree seals over much more quickly.

Before trimming

We trim hedges large and small. We also offer growth regulator treatments to hedges which can reduce the trimming needs to every other year. If annually is in your budget then you will enjoy the benefits of a nicely groomed hedge. But if that is not financially practical then it does cost less for us to treat the trees with a regulator than to trim them.
